«J’ai fait des spectacles de danse en tant que chorégraphe. Dans ces créations la lumière occupe une place importante, car sans elle, on ne peut voir la danse. Donc quand je monte un projet, je pense à la construction lumière, elle ne doit pas illustrer mais être intégrée pleinement. C’est le jour où j’ai compris cela que j’ai commencé à transmettre la danse au public, grâce à la lumière. En parallèle de la création chorégraphique, il y a une installation nommée Haptic. Le concept s’articule autour du « toucher de la lumière ». J’ai voulu travailler la lumière comme une sensation physique. Par exemple, la façon dont nous pouvons distinguer en détail les pixels d’une photo dépend de la distance qui nous sépare de l’écran.
Je veux travailler la lumière comme un objet à part entière que l’oeil sent. C’est de cette volonté qu’est née Haptic. La lumière est projetée directement sur la paupière du spectateur, qui est utilisée comme un écran, le but est de sentir la lumière les yeux fermés. Il y a une version monochrome et une version couleur ; l’un met l’accent sur les variations d’intensité et l’autre sur les fréquences.
Le mot « voir » implique un objet visuel, comme il n’y en a pas dans cette installation je préfère utiliser le verbe « sentir ». J’aimerais que le public se rappelle de cette sensation de lumière ressentie pendant l’expérience.» Hiroaki Umeda

«I have made dance pieces as a choreographer so far. In dance pieces, light is a significant factor, if there were no light, no dance could be seen. To think and make a dance piece, I have to consider the construction of dance with lighting. Light is a part of dance to me. What I am conscious about in dance pieces is that light has to exist on stage more as a complementary element to dance than a tool for showing dance. From this perspective, I had to be so aware of transmitting dance to audience’s eyes along with light. Among my dance pieces, there is a piece called Haptic. The concept of this piece was “touching light”. In that, I had a desire to sense light in a more physical way. For example, the way we can or cannot see the details of the pixels from a picture on a computer, depending
on the distance our eyes are from the screen.
I wanted to approach the use of light as a physical object transmitted to our eyes. I concluded to the idea of making this installation, based on my desire to sense light as a physical object. In this installation, using projectors, light is projected directly on audience’s eyelids, which are used as a screen, light is sensed because transmitted through the eyelids. There will be a monochrome version and a colour version. One focuses on construction of various intensities; the other will be on frequencies.
The word “see” implies a visual object. But as there is no visual object in this piece, I would rather use “sense” than “see”. I would like the audience to bring back the whole experience as a sense of light.» Hiroaki Umeda
